SMS "Straight Male Shota" is an attempt to redefine the "boy's love" genre.
The main objective of SMS is to develop an anthropology of boyhood through literature, history, and sociology. This is in opposition to shotacon which seeks to sexualize the nature of boyhood, boy's friendships, and boys themselves. Using myths, poetry, English literature, (as well a variety of research papers and essays) -- the goal of this website is to address the issues that effect the lives of today's boys, namely -- the imposition of sexuality (especially homoeroticism) on the average boy's behaviors and feelings, the sexual objectification of the boy's body, and the loss of the boy's connection to his friends, his family, and the world. If you are the type of person who has a fondness for Mark Twain's Tom Sawyer or Rudyard Kipling's Mowgli, if you find joy in reliving childhood memories and fantasies, and if you desire for a better world for all boys -- then consider yourself welcome!

The Crisis
"Boy's Love" is defined as a literary genre which "portrays the romantic love of two men, often in a sexually explicit form." Likewise, shotacon, by definition "portrays pre-adolescent boys in sexually charged situations as objects of attraction." (source) It's this definition (and subculture) that we take issue with. It should be obvious enough that the reduction of the boy to an object of sexual gratification is enough to cause controversy. However, there are too many people who will justify this unnatural attraction by means of fiction: "If it's not real, then I'm not hurting anyone." And because an attraction to shotacon is a two-dimensional complex (a nijigen konpurekkusu to borrow from Hiroki Azuma), these fans take no issue with the implications or underlying motives beneath the shotacon genre itself.
The problem with this argument comes when it is compared to the reality upon which it is based. For shota (anime boys) themselves are not a fictional concept, but rather are modern depictions of the "ideal boy." Thus, the problem we see is that the shotacon (the boy lover) is sexually attracted to what the shota (the boy) represents. Therefore, the intention of the shotacon is very real. The use of comics, erotic roleplay, and online messageboards and private chat rooms to discuss and distribute said content -- is all but a way to live out a very dangerous, abusive fantasy that the shotacon has no other choice but to paint as harmless or ordinary.
The Solution
SMS was created for those with a pure heart, for those who see the good in an art that has taken on a corrupted form. For those who wish to return to the heroic adventures of Astroboy (Astroboy), while also denouncing the fetishization of his boy-robot descendent Reg (Made in Abyss). The good news is that there exists art for those who love boys with the love of a brother or a best friend. And the solution is rather simple. All it takes is adopting a personalistic philosophy - to see the youth (whether he be fictional or real) as worthy of all the love and dignity as any other ordinary person. This also means deconstructing one's passions for shota, getting to the roots and understanding what drew them to this genre in the first place. This website hosts a number of essays, resources, and books available to help you better understand the shotaro complex.
